STUMP GRINDING

A stump left in the ground sends up suckers, hosts honey fungus and stops you doing anything with that patch. We grind it out below the surface so you can turf, pave or build over the top.

Or call Connor direct on 07738 008077

Taking a tree down and leaving the stump is like taking a wall down and leaving the footing. It is fine if nothing is going there, and a problem the moment you want a lawn, a patio, a fence line or a shed.

Why bother

  • Suckering. Plenty of species — poplar, lime, cherry, willow, elm — will keep throwing up shoots from a live stump and its roots for years. Cutting them off does not stop it
  • Honey fungus. A dead stump is a food source, and honey fungus spreads from it through the soil to living plants. It is one of the few garden diseases that can take out a mature hedge or tree
  • You cannot build over it. As the stump rots the ground above it drops, which sinks a patio, dips a lawn and pulls a fence post out of line
  • Space. A big stump takes up the exact spot you wanted the shed

How it works

A grinder chips the stump away with a rotating cutting wheel, working down and outwards. Standard is around 150–200mm below the surface, which is enough for turf and planting. Where a patio, drive or footing is going on top we go deeper and take out more of the major roots — tell us what is going there and we will grind to suit.

What you are left with is a hole full of woodchip and soil. It can be raked back in and topped with soil, or barrowed out and replaced with topsoil, which is what you want if you are turfing — grass does not establish well in a bed of rotting chip that is robbing the soil of nitrogen.

What slows it down here

Flint. The chalk across this area has a flinty cap over it, and the grinder’s teeth do not like flint. Stump grinding in Chesham, Berkhamsted and the higher ground genuinely takes longer than it does on clean ground, and an honest quote says so up front rather than adding it afterwards.

Access. The machine has to reach the stump. A narrow side gate limits which grinder we can bring, and a stump in a back garden behind a terrace is a different price to one on a front lawn. We check at the visit.

Services. Grinding through a buried electric cable, gas pipe or drain is the one genuinely dangerous mistake in this work. We check what is around the stump and where the services run before we start, and we would rather ask you an awkward question about where the electric goes to the garage than find out with the machine.

The alternatives, honestly

  • Digging it out — possible with a machine on a small stump with room to work, and it leaves a large hole and a lot of spoil. Usually more disruptive than grinding, not less
  • Chemical stump killer — kills the stump over a season so it stops suckering, but the stump is still there and still rotting. It does not let you build over it
  • Leaving it — a perfectly good option if nothing is going there and you do not mind it. A stump left as a habitat pile is genuinely good for wildlife, and we will happily leave it if that is what you want

We normally grind stumps as part of a tree removal or a garden clearance, and it is priced as its own line because it is a separate machine and a separate visit in some cases.

How we work

  • Free site visit. We walk the garden with you, talk it through, sketch a rough plan on the spot and take measurements
  • Detailed written quotation within 48 hours. Itemised, so you can see what each part costs and leave out anything you’d rather not do yet
  • We build it on agreed dates, with our own team doing the clearing, groundwork and construction
  • Everything goes. We’re licensed waste carriers, so the spoil and arisings leave legally and the paperwork exists

We don’t put prices on the website. The same job on a flat plot with a drive to the back, and on a sloping garden you can only reach through the house, are genuinely different jobs — any figure here would be a guess. The visit is free and gets you a real number.

Common questions

QUESTIONS WE GET ASKED

How deep do you grind?

Around 150 to 200mm below the surface as standard, which is fine for turf and planting. If a patio, driveway or footing is going over the top we go deeper and take out more of the main roots — tell us what is planned and we will grind to suit rather than doing it twice.

Can I put a lawn straight over it?

Not straight over the chip. Grinding leaves a hole full of woodchip mixed with soil, and rotting chip pulls nitrogen out of the ground, so grass struggles. Take the chip out and backfill with topsoil and it will be fine.

Why does it cost more round here?

Flint. The ground across Chesham, Berkhamsted and the higher chalk is full of it and it blunts the grinder’s teeth, so the job takes longer. We would rather price that in honestly at the start than surprise you at the end.

Will the roots keep growing?

No. Once the stump is ground out and the crown removed, the remaining roots die off and rot down in the ground. Suckering only continues while the stump is alive, which is why grinding stops it and simply cutting the shoots off does not.

Can you get the machine into my back garden?

Usually — there are grinders narrow enough for a standard side gate. Where nothing fits, the options are dismantling the machine to get it through, taking a fence panel out temporarily, or digging by hand on a small stump. We check the access at the visit before quoting.

Do I need permission to grind a stump?

Not usually — but if the tree was protected, the consent for its removal may carry conditions, including a replacement planting requirement. If the tree is still standing and protected, that is a different matter entirely; see our protected trees page before anything is cut.
